Experience the Surreal World of ‘Fish’: Hunter Schafer and Tim Roth Shine in Carlo Hintermann’s Venice Masterpiece (Exclusive)

Hunter Schafer and Tim Roth are teaming up for a new film called “Fish,” which promises to be a unique blend of drama and surrealism set in a dreamlike Venice. Directed by Carlo Hintermann, the film will kick off production early in 2026.

The story centers on Professor Fish Osborne, played by Roth. He’s an art historian going through a strange transformation—he’s slowly turning into a fish. As this bizarre change unfolds, his student Billie, portrayed by Schafer, and her classmates start to look at themselves in new ways. They learn that this “mutation” can be a form of liberation rather than a curse.

Roth recently finished filming the highly anticipated “Peaky Blinders” movie with Cillian Murphy and Barry Keoghan. Schafer is set to star in the upcoming Amazon series “Blade Runner 2099” alongside Michelle Yeoh. Earlier this year, she earned a nomination for her role in the horror film “Cuckoo” and will appear in A24’s “Mother Mary” with Anne Hathaway.

“Fish” is a collaboration between Italy’s Indiana Production and Hintermann’s Citrullo International. It’s co-written by Hintermann, Marco Saura, and Tania Pedroni. The project has backing from the Italian culture ministry, the Veneto Film Commission, and Media Creative Europe.

Citrullo International has worked on notable films such as “Rabin: the Last Day” and “Monte.” Hintermann’s previous work on “Book of Vision,” which had ties to Terrence Malick, showcased his talent for merging past and present in an engaging manner.

At Cannes, “Fish” is expected to stand out as a flagship title for Minerva Pictures, a company with over 1,000 titles in its catalog, focusing mainly on commercial films. Minerva recently partnered with TVCO, enhancing their portfolio with more art house films.

As the film industry evolves, innovative projects like “Fish” highlight the creativity and depth that contemporary filmmakers are bringing to audiences. The intersection of fantasy and reality in stories like these reflects a growing trend in cinema, inviting viewers to see their own identities through new lenses.
