If you’ve traveled in Europe or Japan, you might wonder why the U.S. hasn’t embraced high-speed trains until now. Well, change is finally here with the launch of Amtrak’s NextGen Acela.
This new train can reach speeds of 160 mph, making it a game-changer for rail travel in the U.S. I recently took a ride on its inaugural route from New York City to New Haven, and it felt a lot like Italy’s modern Frecciarossa trains. While we didn’t hit maximum speed on my trip, it still felt much quicker than regular Amtrak trains. For those who often use Amtrak, you’ll notice how the NextGen Acela is a significant upgrade in speed and comfort.
A New Standard for Amtrak
The NextGen Acela consists of eight cars, including first-class and quiet cars. It offers 27% more seating capacity. You can now board in big cities like New York, Boston, and Washington, D.C., with stops in Philadelphia, New Haven, and more. Amtrak plans to introduce a total of 28 of these new trains, launching five so far, with the aim to have them all in service by 2027.
Ticket Prices
Ticket prices vary based on the route and how far in advance you book. A one-way ticket from New York to Washington, D.C. can cost between $100 and $500. For example, I checked prices on my Amtrak app and found a one-way Business Class seat to New Haven for $153, but if I booked three months ahead, it was only $78.
Onboard Experience
Working from the NextGen Acela beats working from a typical office. Each seat has an outlet, USB ports, and reading lights. And guess what? There’s free high-speed Wi-Fi, so you can stay connected while enjoying beautiful views. The seats are designed with comfort in mind, offering ample legroom and winged headrests.
Accessibility is another focus; the restrooms have enough space for mobility devices. They even have features like voice prompts to help you lock the door.
Dining Delights
The “Café Acela” in car six serves a variety of meals and snacks. Options include Mediterranean salads, antipasto plates, and various sandwiches. I indulged in a delicious cheese plate, reminiscent of train rides in Italy. There’s also a selection of drinks, including soft drinks and a wine selection for Business Class travelers.
First-class passengers enjoy even more perks, like access to the Metropolitan Lounge pre-departure and at-seat meal service featuring dishes by award-winning restaurateur Stephen Starr.

The introduction of NextGen Acela is a positive step toward modernizing U.S. rail travel. With plush seating, convenient outlets, tasty food, and a train that promises quicker travel times, the future of train travel in America appears bright.
