Stern Pinball Inc. has teamed up with The Pokémon Company to unveil the first-ever Pokémon-themed pinball machine. While Pokémon has appeared in other formats before, this is the first arcade-ready game. The new machine, Pokémon Pinball, is packed with innovative features. Players can collect Pokémon, save progress on a digital Pokédex, and enjoy an interactive experience with an animatronic Pikachu and HD anime clips.
This collaboration ensures that Pokémon is represented authentically. Lead Programmer Tanio Klyce emphasizes the effort in combining pinball design with the Pokémon universe. The game is primarily focused on the original 151 Pokémon from the Kanto region, featuring familiar characters and battle mechanics right from the start.
Much of the game showcases classic Pokémon battles. Players can engage in dramatic showdowns, with the machine displaying iconic scenes from the anime. The speakers echo with the beloved theme song, adding to the nostalgia.
Interestingly, while the machine emphasizes Gen 1 Pokémon, it will include a total of 182 Pokémon at launch, thanks to its online connectivity. This allows for future updates to add even more Pokémon, creating an evolving experience. Players can log into the Stern Insider Connected app using a QR code, allowing them to track their scores and progress in catching Pokémon.
Catching Pokémon in pinball is a unique challenge. Players hit targets to fill a meter, which then reveals random Pokémon based on the biome they’re in, like forests or mountains. Successfully capturing them involves using a toy Pokéball on the machine.
As for the battles, players don’t select starters but automatically begin with all four Gen 1 starters. During battles, specific shots light up to guide players, enhancing interaction with the gameplay. The balance between pinball physics and Pokémon battling makes for an engaging experience.
There are three versions of the game: the Pro, Premium, and Limited Edition. The Premium and LE versions come with an animatronic Pikachu and interactive elements that enhance gameplay. The LE version offers additional exclusive aesthetics, while the Pro version is a more affordable option, albeit with fewer features.
