Coratti’s Pizzeria Bar & Bocce has taken over a beloved Ann Arbor location, formerly known as the Original Cottage Inn, after 75 years of operation. Just a short walk from the University of Michigan campus, this family-owned restaurant debuted in June, promising a vibrant atmosphere and delicious pizza.

Peter Coratti and his nephews, Peter Pfeffer and Anthony Coratti, are behind this new venture. They opened their first pizza and bocce bar in Howell in 2021, building on a rich family history in Italian cuisine. Their roots trace back to various establishments, including a fine-dining Italian restaurant in Milford and pizzerias in Detroit.

At Coratti’s, guests can choose from three pizza styles: Neapolitan, Detroit-style pan, and round American-style. The dough for the Detroit and American pizzas is made fresh daily, while the Neapolitan pizzas use a special “00” flour that rises overnight and is cooked in a high-temperature wood-fired oven.

Peter and Pfeffer even traveled to Naples to master the authentic pizza-making techniques. The menu offers two main types of Neapolitan pies: “Rosso,” topped with a rich San Marzano tomato sauce, and “Bianca,” drizzled with high-quality extra virgin olive oil. This dedication to authenticity led to their Neapolitan pizzas receiving certification from the Vera Pizza Napoletana organization.

One exciting addition to the menu is the Panuozzo sandwich, a delightful find they discovered in Italy. Made with the same dough as the Neapolitan pizzas, these sandwiches are filled with fresh Italian ingredients like capocollo and fresh mozzarella. Peter says they’ve quickly become a favorite among customers.

The restaurant’s appetizers have also drawn praise. They offer dishes like suppli, which are rice balls topped with Parmesan, and Artichokes Tosca, artichoke hearts cooked in a light egg batter. Notably, many dishes are vegetarian, and there are also vegan options, reflecting the preferences of the local community.

The restaurant environment is just as inviting. Coratti’s has undergone significant renovations, paying homage to its history by preserving its original hardwood floors and iconic brickwork. The new design features large garage doors that open up to blend the dining area with a lively outdoor feel.

The upstairs area includes an event space and dedicated bocce ball courts, all designed to create a fun atmosphere for guests. Peter envisions a place where students, faculty, and locals can come together, play bocce, and enjoy great food.

In addition to the pizzeria, Coratti’s has launched Pietro’s, a nearby gelato shop and market offering fresh gelato, pasta, and other Italian goodies. They plan to introduce more take-out options soon.

Coratti’s Pizzeria Bar & Bocce is open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., extending hours on weekends. The Coratti family is also eyeing East Lansing for their next location, set to open in January.
