Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) is gearing up for a special welcome event called “Deeksharambh Utsav.” This three-day festival will take place from July 28 to 30 at the Tagore Auditorium. The highlight? For the first time, the celebration will start with the sound of a conch and the chanting of Vedic mantras, linking students to India’s rich educational heritage.
The event marks the beginning of a new academic and cultural journey for incoming undergraduate students. MDU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rajbir Singh, will kick off the festival. He emphasized the importance of creating a dignified and inspiring atmosphere through careful planning.
Prof. Harish Kumar, Dean of Academic Affairs, mentioned a unique addition—a ‘guest student gallery.’ This area will allow current students to join in, creating an inspiring environment. Expect welcome gates and fun selfie spots to make the experience memorable.
The Utsav will also feature motivational talks from speakers who’ll cover essential life skills, goal setting, and personal development. Each department will introduce students to the academic structure, resources, and career pathways available at the university.
Prof. Singh noted that the event will highlight MDU’s facilities, like the library and sports areas, enhancing students’ connection to campus life. It’s noteworthy that current students will manage the event, providing them with a chance to develop their leadership skills. “The Utsav will build confidence and a sense of identity for newcomers while forging a strong bond with the university,” he said.
Efforts are underway to make Deeksharambh Utsav an annual tradition, according to Dean of Students’ Welfare Prof. Sapna Garg. Such initiatives are vital in today’s educational landscape, where supporting students’ transition into university life is increasingly recognized. According to a recent survey by the National Center for Education Statistics, 63% of first-year college students report feeling overwhelmed. Events like this can significantly ease that transition.
In a broader context, welcome events have been shown to foster community and belonging. Research from the Journal of Educational Psychology highlights that students who feel connected to their institution tend to perform better academically and socially.
As the planning unfolds, many are looking forward to what promises to be a warm and engaging start to their university experience. The excitement is building, and social media buzz reflects that anticipation—students are already sharing their thoughts and memories of similar welcoming events.
With all these elements coming together, the Deeksharambh Utsav is set to be a launchpad for many successful journeys ahead at MDU. For more information on student support systems, visit the National Center for Education Statistics here.
