Expert Insights: Innovative Solutions to Combat Climate Change Challenges

Experts from the Society of Testing Laboratory Analysts of Nigeria (SoTLAN) have raised alarms about how climate change is affecting food security in Nigeria. They warn that urgent action is needed to prevent worsening food insecurity.

The analysts will gather in Abeokuta, Ogun State, from July 8 to 10 for their 7th Annual Conference. This year’s theme is “The Role of Public Analysts in Tackling the Challenge of Climate Change for Food Security.” They aim to find science-based solutions to combat climate-related threats to food supplies.

Prof. Olugbenga Ogunmoyela, SoTLAN President, emphasized the pressing issues: “Our forests are shrinking, our water is polluted, and our food systems are in danger. Public Analysts must step up to monitor and address these environmental challenges.”

Ogunmoyela also expressed concern over the delay in re-establishing the Governing Council of the Institute of Public Analysts of Nigeria, which was dissolved in June 2023. “Two years have passed with no action. The profession needs proper guidance to thrive,” he said.

He criticized unlicensed individuals infiltrating the field, calling them quacks. He urged the public to seek analysis reports that feature the IPAN Practice Licence Stamp, the only legally recognized document in court.

Ogunmoyela praised the Nigerian government for addressing salary arrears for health sector staff but urged President Bola Tinubu to stabilize professional regulatory bodies.

This conference is more than just a gathering; it’s a call to action for policymakers, analysts, and citizens to unite in safeguarding the environment and ensuring food security.

Recent data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) indicates that over 30% of Nigerian households experience food insecurity. As climate patterns shift, unpredictable weather and flooding continue to affect crop yields, making discussions like these increasingly urgent.
