A team of gastroenterologists, including Dr. E. Rabindranath and Dr. Jacob Raja A.S. from Naruvi Hospitals, along with Dr. A.C. Arun from Lily Mission Hospital, tackled common GERD concerns. Dr. Jacob explained that the esophageal sphincter is like a gate that stops contents from the stomach from going back up into the esophagus. If reflux happens frequently, it can cause issues like persistent heartburn and difficulty swallowing, leading to GERD.
A global study revealed that about one in five people suffer from GERD, especially in Europe and North America. While India has fewer cases, the number is rising among young adults due to unhealthy lifestyles and eating patterns.
To manage GERD, Dr. Rabindranath suggested quitting smoking, reducing alcohol, and steering clear of spicy and fatty foods. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, and managing stress. He also mentioned that GERD can mimic other health issues, such as heart problems, so seeking medical advice is crucial.
Dr. Rabindranath shared practical tips for managing GERD, like propping up your head while sleeping, waiting three to four hours after dinner before hitting the sack, and wearing comfortable clothing during workouts.
Dr. Arun discussed the role of endoscopy in detecting complications from GERD. He cautioned that untreated symptoms can lead to more severe problems, including esophageal ulcers and even cancer. Treatments range from medication to minor surgeries that can help slow down the disease’s progression.
