The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden has launched a YouTube video series aimed at inspiring environmental action in our community, focusing on Elings Park. This beautiful park, which connects Santa Barbara and Goleta, is facing challenges due to invasive weeds that disrupt habitats for local wildlife. The series highlights efforts to remove these invasive plants and replace them with native species like sage, succulents, and oak trees.

Elings Park is a 230-acre gem, recognized as the largest privately funded park in America. It offers stunning views and ample walking paths, but it needs restoration to protect its rich biodiversity. The Community Transformation project aims to revive the unique ecosystems within the park and strengthen the natural connections that support a healthy environment.

Dr. Denise Knapp, the Director of Conservation and Research at the Garden, notes that “Elings Park’s transformation shows how native plants can heal the environment and bring communities together.” This series encourages us to think about the importance of native plant life and the impacts of non-native species on ecological balance.

Viewers can gain insights into how they can incorporate native plants into their own gardens, suggesting that having at least 30% native species can significantly benefit local wildlife. Each native plant plays a role in supporting the diverse creatures of Santa Barbara.
