Amid the growing impacts of climate change, Singapore has declared 2026 as the Year of Climate Adaptation. This initiative aims to spotlight the importance of climate resilience and engage both businesses and communities in meaningful action.
As part of this effort, the Go Green SG movement, running from May 11 to June 28, will involve around 500 partners from various sectors organizing over 1,000 activities. The Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) emphasizes that this is a community-wide effort. “Go Green SG is our movement to inspire collective action for a more sustainable and climate-resilient Singapore,” the MSE stated.
During recent discussions, Minister Grace Fu outlined three critical areas for adaptation: coastal resilience, heat and flood resilience, and food and water security. Exciting activities include guided tours at Sentosa Nature Discovery, where visitors can learn about biodiversity and conservation efforts.
Participants will discover how “cool nodes” help keep the area comfortable for island-goers. Waste management firm Cora Environment, alongside A*STAR, will also host tours of energy-from-waste facilities on Jurong Island, showcasing how waste is converted into energy. Cora operates Singapore’s only private energy-from-waste plant, processing 360,000 tonnes of commercial waste each year into 1.2 million tonnes of steam.
For those seeking indoor activities, the Green Futures Hub offers hands-on experiences related to climate adaptation and eco-stewardship. This hub serves as a learning space to consider real-world climate scenarios.
The Go Green SG initiative began in 2020 as Climate Action Week. Due to increasing public interest in sustainability, the campaign was expanded to a month-long event starting in 2023.
Singapore is not alone in its climate efforts. A recent survey by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) found that 87% of citizens believe in taking steps against climate change. This momentum aligns with Singapore’s goals of enhancing community engagement and resilience.
