Cristin Milioti, fresh off her Emmy nod for HBO’s The Penguin, is diving into another project: an indie horror thriller called Buddy. The film is directed by Casper Kelly, known for quirky shows like Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell and the viral hit Too Many Cooks. Production kicked off this week in Ohio.

The film is being produced by J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules at BoulderLight Pictures, which has had a remarkable year with titles like Companion and the upcoming Weapons. Tyler Davidson and Drew Sykes from Cleveland’s Low Spark Films are also on board, known for films like Emily the Criminal and Take Shelter. They are co-financing Buddy.

Details about the plot are tightly kept, but it promises a “new experience in horror.” Kelly co-wrote the script with Jamie King, who previously collaborated on the Disney+ film World’s Best. BoulderLight’s Tracy Rosenblum serves as an executive producer, with Range Select and UTA handling distribution.

This project brings Sipur Studios into the horror genre for the first time. Kelly’s previous work shows he enjoys blending genres. Too Many Cooks started as a parody but evolved into a slasher narrative, and he also created a fake ad for the cult film Mandy.

Milioti’s role as Sofia Falcone in The Penguin has garnered her not just an Emmy nomination, but also recognition from the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild. She’s also known for her performances in the dark comedy Palm Springs and impactful episodes of Black Mirror.

Historically, horror films have frequently pushed boundaries, reflecting societal fears and cultural shifts. Notably, the horror genre saw a resurgence in 2020, with more than 50% of online viewers reportedly turning to horror films during lockdowns. This trend highlights how horror can be a cathartic escape.
