Nintendo and Universal just dropped the trailer for “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” during a live stream on Wednesday. Fans of the franchise are buzzing with excitement.
The trailer kicks off with Mario and Luigi teasing the now-super-small Bowser. After munching a Mini Mushroom, he ends up in the plumbers’ grasp. Bowser captures the moment by painting a romantic portrait of himself and Princess Peach, but he gets shot down by Mario. Then, things heat up as Mario and Peach spot shooting stars in the sky. They, along with Luigi and Toad, embark on an adventure through space, reminiscent of the “Super Mario Galaxy” game. They’ll explore wild planets, like one that’s just water and another filled with upside-down pyramids—an homage to “Super Mario Odyssey.”
As the story unfolds, our heroes face off against Bowser’s son, Bowser Jr., who has a magical paintbrush just like in “Super Mario Sunshine.” He uses it for some trickery, while the fierce Princess Rosalina, voiced by Brie Larson, showcases her own magic skills.
Familiar voices return in the film: Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Peach), Jack Black (Bowser), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), and Charlie Day (Luigi). This sequel builds on the legacy of “Super Mario Galaxy,” a game considered one of the best in Mario’s history since its launch on the Wii in 2007. In that game, Mario navigates the cosmos to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser.
The previous film, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” released in April 2023, was a huge success, bringing in $1.3 billion globally. This makes it the fifth-highest-grossing animated movie of all time. With such a strong following, expectations for the new movie are high.
Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, along with writer Matthew Fogel, are back at the helm for this project. Mark your calendars—the movie is set for release in April 2026.
The excitement is palpable on social media, with fans sharing their favorite moments from the game and speculating about how the new movie will play out. Given the buzz, it’s clear that “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is going to be a big event.
