The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has recently wrapped up its call for proposals to set up regional offices, attracting interest from 47 countries. This strong response highlights a shared vision: to bring financial support closer to those who need it.
The idea behind establishing regional offices is simple: climate action must happen at the local level. GCF Executive Director Mafalda Duarte emphasized that GCF aims to be not just a financial source but a genuine partner in local climate initiatives. This move could enhance collaboration and boost effective climate strategies across various nations.
The GCF’s Secretariat will soon review the submitted proposals based on approved criteria. An update on this will be provided at the Board’s next meeting, scheduled for October 27-30, 2025. The detailed analysis of suitable host countries will be discussed later.
Historically, since its inception in 2010 and operations starting in 2015, the GCF has only had its headquarters in Songdo, South Korea. The decision to decentralize began in February 2025 when the Board agreed on the need for regional offices. The terms for selecting host countries were finalized in July 2025, leading to this recent call for proposals.
To qualify as a host, countries must be non-Annex I Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Additionally, proposed cities must meet specific hardship classifications.
As of now, the GCF boasts an impressive $18 billion portfolio, facilitating 314 projects across over 133 countries. This fund plays a crucial role in supporting developing nations in their climate efforts, allowing them to adapt and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
In recent years, public interest in climate action has surged. Surveys show that over 70% of people prioritize environmental issues over other political concerns. This emphasis reflects a growing recognition of the urgent need for coordinated global efforts.
