Explore the Exciting New Trails Enhancing Open Space North of Colorado Springs!

A new trail network at Santa Fe Open Space, located north of Colorado Springs, is now complete. This project, overseen by El Paso County Senior Park Planner Ross Williams, started in 2017 when the county acquired the 65-acre area. The recently finished Corral Loop and Mount Herman Overlook trails connect to an existing loop trail, adding to the outdoor experience available to hikers and mountain bikers.

The new network spans just over 2 miles and features diverse landscapes, from grasslands to pine and oak forests, all beneath the stunning backdrop of Elephant Rock and Ben Lomand Mountain. This makes it an attractive spot for those looking to explore the natural beauty of Colorado.

Access is convenient via the New Santa Fe Regional Trail, about half a mile from the Palmer Lake Recreation Area. While it’s easy to reach, the area also feels somewhat secluded, offering a peaceful retreat from the busyness of nearby towns.

The Corral Loop is particularly noteworthy. It meanders through a meadow sprinkled with relics from the area’s ranching past before linking up with the Far View Loop. This loop lives up to its name, providing breathtaking views of the mountains that surround Palmer Lake and the impressive Rampart Range, including Mount Herman.

Williams recalls discovering the ideal ridge for the Mount Herman Overlook, nestled between ponderosa pines. He believed visitors would appreciate the immaculate view. The trail does present a challenge with its steep incline and crib steps, but the reward—a stunning vista—is worth the effort.

The increase in trail development reflects a broader trend toward promoting outdoor activities. Research shows that engaging with nature can greatly improve mental health and well-being. A survey by the National Recreation and Park Association found that 72% of respondents reported feeling more relaxed after spending time outdoors.
