New Delhi: Indian Railways has taken a big leap in modern travel with 144 Vande Bharat services now running on its electrified network. Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently confirmed this expansion, showcasing the government’s commitment to updating the nation’s rail infrastructure.
Vande Bharat trains are semi-high-speed models created by Indian Railways to make travel quicker and more comfortable. These trains are equipped with features like rapid acceleration, a collision avoidance system called Kavach, and automatic doors for better safety and convenience.
Passengers can enjoy amenities such as mini pantries with hot cases and coolers, ergonomic reclining seats, and charging ports at every seat. There’s also special access for differently-abled passengers and enhanced security with CCTV on board.
These services aim to reduce congestion on busy routes while ensuring safety and affordability. The popularity of Vande Bharat is evident; in 2024-25, about 30 million passengers traveled on these trains, with around 9.3 million more traveling between April and June 2025.
This growth in Vande Bharat services marks a significant step in transforming rail travel in India, blending speed, comfort, and safety on some of the busiest routes. Recent launches include new routes connecting Bengaluru to Belagavi, and others linking Amritsar to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Nagpur to Pune, all inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Prime Minister interacted with passengers, including students, during his recent journey, making the event a community celebration. Local leaders and officials joined the launch, emphasizing the importance of this modern rail service in enhancing connectivity and promoting regional development.
The introduction of Vande Bharat trains aligns with a broader trend in global transportation, where modern and efficient rail systems are a priority. According to a report by the International Union of Railways, countries investing in modern rail infrastructure see significant increases in passenger satisfaction and environmental benefits.
With this expansion, Indian Railways is not just modernizing its fleet but also positioning itself as a key player in sustainable transportation. As travel evolves, rail systems like Vande Bharat are set to become more vital for a growing population looking for safe and efficient travel options.
