Colorado Springs is enhancing its initiative to help people with disabilities explore the great outdoors. The Parks Department has been offering free guided trips at Red Rock Canyon and Blodgett open spaces since last year. Now, they plan to include Ute Valley Park and Bluestem Prairie Open Space by October.
Regional Parks Manager Scott Abbott expressed excitement about the expansion. “This program enriches the outdoor experience for individuals of all abilities,” he said, emphasizing the importance of making nature accessible for everyone.
El Paso County has also championed similar efforts. They utilize Terrain Hoppers, ATV-like vehicles, for guided outings at Bear Creek and Fountain Creek nature centers. These versatile vehicles are now available at a growing number of parks across the state.
In 2023, Colorado Springs added two Trackchairs—special vehicles suited for those with mobility challenges. Funding for this came from Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Outdoor Equality Grant and the city’s Office of Accessibility. A soft launch allowed 12 reservations for Trackchair users and their companions.
By expanding to four parks, the Parks Department anticipates hosting over 220 sessions by the end of the season. For those interested, morning and afternoon sessions can be booked at coloradosprings.gov/trackchair throughout September.
This push for inclusive outdoor experiences reflects a broader trend. According to a recent report by the National Park Service, about 26% of Americans identify as having a disability, highlighting the need for accessible recreational options. Many social media users have shared positive reactions, praising these initiatives for making nature more welcoming.
With increasing awareness and commitment to accessibility, more parks across the country are likely to follow suit, ensuring everyone can enjoy the beauty of the outdoors.
