On a rainy Saturday, residents of South Orange County and workers from UCI Health gathered to celebrate the soon-to-open UCI Health – Irvine, the sixth hospital in their network. This facility, set to open in December, will be groundbreaking as the nation’s first all-electric acute care hospital. The project is a collaboration between CO Architects and Hensel Phelps.
The new hospital will join an expanding medical complex on Jamboree Road, which already includes the Joe C. Wen & Family Advanced Care Center and the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Guests toured the hospital, learning how its design prioritizes patient safety, quality care, and sustainability. Some highlights from the tour included:
- Spacious patient rooms averaging 250 square feet, providing comfort for visiting family.
- 75-inch smart TVs in each room, allowing patients to order food, access their care team, and enjoy entertainment.
- Abundant natural light, soothing artwork, outdoor gardens, and terraces featuring native plants.
- One of the nation’s first all-electric kitchens designed for a hospital setting.
- Eco-friendly furnishings that are free from harmful chemicals.
This commitment to sustainability is crucial; hospitals are responsible for nearly 8% of the United States’ greenhouse gas emissions, according to a recent report by the American Hospital Association.
