Exploring a space-based, scalable AI infrastructure system design

Google has introduced Project Suncatcher, a research moonshot that envisions compact constellations of solar-powered satellites carrying Google TPUs and linked by free-space optical links. The company says the approach could help scale AI compute in space while reducing pressure on terrestrial resources.

The project is based on the idea that space may offer better conditions for large-scale AI infrastructure. Google said the Sun emits more power than 100 trillion times humanity’s total electricity production, and that in the right orbit, a solar panel can be up to 8 times more productive than on earth and produce power nearly continuously, reducing the need for batteries.

Google shared early research in the preprint paper “Towards a future space-based, highly scalable AI infrastructure system design,” which outlines progress on several technical challenges. These include high-bandwidth communication between satellites, orbital dynamics, and radiation effects on computing.

The company said it is focusing on a modular design of smaller, interconnected satellites as it works toward a future space-based AI infrastructure. Project Suncatcher is part of Google’s broader history of moonshot projects, which the company said has included work on a large-scale quantum computer and an autonomous vehicle effort that became Waymo.
