A recent report on quantum technology highlights important trends in Asia-Pacific nations.

TOKYO, Jan. 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Quantum technology is changing the world. Countries are eager to tap into its potential. This field includes quantum computing, communication, and sensing, exciting governments, businesses, and researchers. The Asia-Pacific region is making significant strides in quantum research and development.
Japan is pushing ahead, supported by initiatives like the “Quantum Technology and Innovation Strategy.” From 1990 to 2021, Japan published over 13,000 quantum papers. Top institutions like RIKEN, AIST, and the University of Tokyo lead this charge, creating environments for industry and academia to work together. Japan also collaborates globally, especially with the USA and Europe, to fill talent gaps and enhance impact.
A comprehensive report from the Japan Science and Technology Agency, released in March 2023, examines the growth of quantum technology in the Asia-Pacific. It highlights key developments and international partnerships, focusing on countries like Japan, China, India, Australia, South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan.
China leads the way with over 27,000 published quantum papers from 1990 to 2021. Its strong national strategies, like the 14th Five-Year Plan, boost quantum development. According to the report, “China is a key player in global quantum research.”
India aims to enhance both basic and applied research through its National Mission on Quantum Technologies, with about 6,000 published papers. Australia and South Korea are also making significant contributions, with plans for advancements including a 50-qubit quantum computer in South Korea by 2024. Singapore and Taiwan support their research through government programs and collaborations.
“Cross-border collaboration is vital for quantum technology progress,” reports the APRC. Highlights include China‘s quantum experiments with the University of Vienna and Australia‘s partnerships with USA and the UK.
“The Asia-Pacific is becoming a significant center for quantum development,” concludes the report. With strategic investments and partnerships, this region could lead the global quantum race in the decades to come.
