Students in the Winter Term Contemporary Health class recently visited Cone Health’s Nutrition and Diabetes Lifestyle Center to explore the topic of diabetes.
During this visit, Assistant Professor Sandra Darfour-Oduro’s students engaged with Phil Aubel, a registered dietitian. He provided valuable insights into diabetes, covering various types, diagnosis methods, and the factors that affect blood sugar levels.
Aubel emphasized the vital role of physical activity and a balanced diet in managing diabetes. Students learned how certain foods and lifestyle choices can either raise or lower blood sugar. This information is crucial for anyone living with diabetes and those who want to prevent it.
The course itself focuses on contemporary health issues both in the United States and worldwide. Students discuss major non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes, along with the risk factors that lead to these health problems.
This hands-on learning experience allows students to connect classroom theory with real-world health challenges. It equips them with knowledge that is applicable not just in their studies but also in their everyday lives.
