OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, recently met with India’s IT Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, to talk about building a low-cost AI ecosystem in the country. This meeting is significant, especially since Altman is navigating legal challenges in India, which is one of OpenAI’s largest markets.

Vaishnaw described the meeting on X as a “super cool discussion.” He highlighted India’s ambition to develop a complete AI infrastructure, including GPUs, models, and applications. Altman showed interest in collaborating on these initiatives.
Last week, Vaishnaw praised the Chinese startup DeepSeek for its affordable AI assistant, comparing its approach to India’s efforts to create a localized AI model. He noted that India successfully sent a mission to the moon at a fraction of the cost of other countries, raising the question: “Why can’t we create AI models that are equally cost-effective?”
This visit comes after Altman’s trips to Japan and Korea, where he secured partnerships with companies like SoftBank and Kakao. He also discussed an AI data center project in Seoul that has garnered attention from high-level officials in the U.S.
