Exploring India’s Interest in Russian Su-57 Fighters: A Strategic Move Ahead of Putin’s Visit

India is seriously considering acquiring Russia’s Su-57 fighter jets to strengthen its Air Force amid a pressing shortage of combat aircraft. This discussion is expected to take center stage during President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India for the upcoming summit in December.

Sources say Russia has proposed a joint production agreement for the Su-57, allowing India to manufacture these jets using local facilities, like those of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). India has previous experience with Russian jets, having successfully produced the Su-30MKI. This familiarity could help streamline the process for the Su-57, making it a practical choice for India’s needs.

Recently, Roman Babushkin, a diplomat from the Russian Embassy in India, emphasized Russia’s long-standing partnership in defense. He pointed out that this cooperation predates India’s “Make in India” initiative and is committed to supporting India’s defense capabilities.

Currently, India’s Air Force has fallen below the needed 32 fighter squadrons, with a sanctioned strength of 42 squadrons. This is especially critical as both China and Pakistan enhance their air power.

The Su-57, or Su-57E in its export form, is a fifth-generation fighter featuring stealth capabilities and advanced technology. While some Western experts have raised doubts about its stealth effectiveness, the aircraft has already been tested in real combat scenarios, such as in Ukraine. This insight is valuable for Indian defense strategy.

Analysts suggest that India’s interest in the Su-57 is not just about acquiring new jets. It’s about being able to produce and maintain them locally, something that other options like the F-35 do not fully offer.

Historically, India previously attempted to develop a fifth-generation fighter with Russia through the FGFA program, which faced setbacks over technology sharing and costs. However, this new offer includes a commitment to complete technology transfers and local assembly, which could address past concerns.

Meanwhile, India faces external pressures from the U.S. to consider the F-35. Although the American fighter has vast capabilities, India must navigate issues like pricing and operational limitations within its defense system. A senior Indian Air Force officer stated, “India must consider sovereignty, reliability, and cost-effectiveness,” highlighting the unique advantages of Russian aircraft.

As preparations for President Putin’s visit ramp up, discussions are anticipated to cover many topics, with defense cooperation likely remaining a key focus. The Su-57 may serve not just as a military asset but also symbolize the enduring partnership between India and Russia.
