R. Madhu Sudan, Charge d’Affaires at the Indian Embassy in Japan, recently visited the National Institute of Defence Studies (NIDS) in Tokyo. During his visit, he discussed India’s military strength and strategic approach, especially highlighting Operation Sindoor and India’s firm stance against terrorism.
At the NIDS, Sudan emphasized collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region. This aligns India’s Vision Mahasagar with Japan’s Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) strategy. Officials from Japan’s Ministry of Defence (JMOD) and the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) were present for these discussions, indicating a high level of diplomatic engagement.
Operation Sindoor, launched by the Indian armed forces in May 2025, was a response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. This operation aimed at designated terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, showcasing a strategic, measured military action that focused on addressing terrorism without escalating the situation further.
Sudan also met with NIDS President Imakyurei Manabu to explore ways to strengthen ties between India and Japan, particularly in defense and technology. This reflects broader trends where countries are seeking to bolster security partnerships amid regional tensions.
On May 8, Sudan spoke at India Day, organized by the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo. The event underscored the enduring India-Japan partnership in science and technology. Notable presentations included insights on global opportunities with Indian collaboration, emphasizing the importance of scientific engagement.
In April, both nations engaged in the eighth Army-to-Army Staff Talks, further solidifying their defense cooperation. The discussions reaffirmed commitment to a free and inclusive Indo-Pacific, highlighting the ongoing partnership in defense initiatives.
These interactions illustrate a growing partnership between India and Japan, driven by shared interests in security, economic stability, and regional cooperation.
