Every patient with advanced pancreatic cancer who visits Dr. Zev Wainberg wants an experimental drug over more chemotherapy. Dr. Wainberg heads the GI Oncology Program at UCLA and is leading trials for a promising new drug called daraxonrasib.
The sad truth is that patients often feel hopeless after conventional treatments start failing. Dr. Wainberg recalls, “Half of my patients receive a placebo, and every one on chemotherapy has passed.”
Recently, excitement around daraxonrasib has soared. In a phase 3 trial with 500 patients, it doubled survival time for advanced pancreatic cancer, moving the average from 6.7 to 13.2 months. She’s reported fantastic results—her liver lesions have vanished and her pancreatic tumor shrank by 80%. “I feel great,” she shares, choosing not to focus on her diagnosis.
Daraxonrasib works by targeting the KRAS mutation, responsible for uncontrolled cell growth in many cancers. For years, scientists struggled to develop a treatment for this mutation. Dr. Wolpin credits recent advancements in chemistry for creating this breakthrough drug.
While daraxonrasib isn’t a cure and tumors can eventually adapt, it marks a significant shift in treatment options. Early studies show that it helps patients even without the KRAS mutation. Meanwhile, Revolution Medicines continues to develop additional related drugs, with more trials on the horizon.
Despite the promise, patients continue to experience some side effects like nausea or skin issues but often find them manageable. Debby commented, “We’re talking life or death here. I can live with a little rash.”
Life moves on for Debby and her husband, Ron. He’s diligent about her medication schedule, reminding her to take pills on an empty stomach. “You just have to keep going,” Debby advises. Each day is a gift, and she’s determined to make the most of her second chance.
