Nasa is set to hold a media call at 1 p.m. EST on Friday, February 7th. They will share updates on their science and technology efforts during Intuitive Machines’ upcoming lunar mission. This launch is part of NASA’s CLPS effort, designed to establish a presence on the Moon as part of the Artemis program.
You can listen to the call live on NASA’s website: https://www.nasa.gov/live.
Some key participants in the call will include:
- Nicky Fox, from NASA’s Science Mission Directorate
- Niki Werkheiser, who focuses on technology at NASA
- Trent Martin, senior vice president at Intuitive Machines
To join via phone, media representatives should RSVP by emailing ksc-newsroom@mail.nasa.gov at least two hours before the briefing.
The Intuitive Machines lunar lander, named Athena, will launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. The launch window opens on February 26th.
This mission, known as IM-2, will carry out important experiments to explore resources on the Moon. It will use a drill and a mass spectrometer to look for gases or volatiles in the lunar soil at Mons Mouton, a plateau near the Moon’s South Pole. Additionally, the lander will have a Laser Retroreflector Array to help future missions navigate the lunar surface. A propulsive drone will also be included to explore the area.
In addition, NASA’s Lunar Trailblazer spacecraft will launch alongside Athena to map water on the Moon.
Nasa’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative supports commercial delivery of lunar missions, fostering industry growth for ongoing space exploration.
