DIMAPUR — On May 26, the Nagaland Legislative Assembly’s Committee on Environment and Climate Change visited Pfutsero town in the Phek district. Their goal? To evaluate how the town manages its environment and development efforts.
Leading the tour was Chairman Achumbemo Kikon, along with other committee members like Zhaleo Rio, a consultant for urban development, and MLAs Y Mankhao Konyak, A Pongshi Phom, Dr. Neisatuo Mero, and Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhütso.
One major stop was the Pfutsero Town Council’s waste dumping site, where they assessed the current waste management practices. The committee aimed to understand the challenges posed by solid waste and discuss the need for better sanitation and sustainable practices in the community.
In a related discussion, experts stress that effective waste management is vital for public health. According to a recent report by the United Nations, improper waste disposal contributes to about 1.3 billion tons of waste generated annually, putting significant pressure on local environments.
The committee also visited Glory Peak to inspect the mountain radar system. They gathered insights on the installation as well as the necessary infrastructure and environmental precautions in that area. The members interacted with local groups, including the Chakhesang Public Organisation and the town’s mothers’ associations, fostering community dialogue on environmental concerns.
After these inspections, the committee met with Pfutsero Town Council members. The discussions revealed pressing civic and environmental issues needing government intervention and support. Many councillors expressed the challenges faced in maintaining a healthy and clean environment, stressing the importance of immediate action.
In the broader context, communities around the world are facing similar challenges. For instance, recent surveys indicate a growing public awareness of climate change and local environmental issues. Over 70% of respondents in various regions believe that local governments should prioritize sustainability initiatives.
As highlighted during the Pfutsero visit, ongoing dialogue between officials and local communities is essential for effective environmental management. It not only brings attention to immediate issues but also builds a collaborative approach to sustainable development.
