Neo Wolfenstein: A Retro Challenge
Imagine the Neo Geo trying to run a classic like Doom. It’s a tough task, but there’s hope for a simpler game like Wolfenstein 3D. Modern Vintage Gamer (MVG) recently showcased a demo of this idea, creating a raycasting game that mimics the original’s visuals.
In this demo, the raycaster sends out virtual rays. It checks how far the player is from walls in their view. Then, it uses this info to create a picture of the walls using 80 scaled sprites. These sprites are designed to look like the walls of the game, and the Neo Geo’s hardware is pretty good at stretching them out to fit. The result is a basic first-person view that captures some of that retro magic.
Currently, this demo runs at just eight frames per second. It lacks all the enemies and logic of Wolfenstein 3D, which makes it feel quite incomplete. Plus, the Neo Geo struggles with complex game mechanics that Doom includes, like stairs and textured walls.
MVG believes that making Doom work on the Neo Geo would likely require extra hardware, similar to the Super FX2 chip used in limited Doom ports on systems like the SNES. Unless we see such innovation, he thinks the Neo Geo will probably stay Doom-free for a while.
“Nothing is impossible,” MVG said. It’s a reminder that technology has limits, but people love to push boundaries.
A Look at Game Development Trends
Today, platform limitations can often be overcome in creative ways, especially with indie developers. Tools like Unity and Unreal Engine have lowered barriers, allowing smaller teams to develop impressive games even for classic platforms.
In 2022, approximately 25% of gamers expressed interest in playing retro-style games, according to a recent survey by the Entertainment Software Association. Interest in retro gaming continues to grow, leading to creative solutions for old hardware challenges.
The Big Picture
While the Neo Geo may not host Doom, the ongoing evolution of gaming technology ensures that developers will continue to explore and innovate. As MVG’s demo shows, even seemingly impossible tasks can spark new ideas in game design. The determination to push limits in gaming could lead to surprises, opening doors for the classics to find new life.
