The cups, made by Lunette, went up for about 9 minutes, reaching an altitude of 1.9 miles (3 kilometers). During this time, they faced vibrations and pressures typical of space travel. Researchers conducted leak tests with water and glycerol after the flight and found that the cups remained intact, showing no damage or degradation. These results were recently shared in the journal NPJ Women’s Health.

Menstrual cups are making waves as a sustainable alternative to single-use products like pads and tampons. With the ability to last for years, they are not just eco-friendly but also practical for future space missions. While many astronauts currently choose to pause their menstrual cycles using hormonal methods, this may not always be feasible, especially during longer missions where managing waste becomes challenging.

Interestingly, women on Earth often use hormonal contraceptives to control their periods. This method is generally safe and can help reduce period symptoms.
