When you gaze out your window in Bermuda, the scene looks peaceful. But that beauty faces serious threats from climate change, overdevelopment, and plastic waste. It’s easy to think these issues don’t affect us directly. However, Bermuda is vulnerable, and our way of life hangs in the balance.
At the Bermuda Environmental Sustainability Taskforce (BEST), we’re dedicated to protecting our island’s precious land, sea, and air. Founded in 2007 during the ‘Save Southlands’ initiative, we strive to be an environmental watchdog and advocate for meaningful change.
Our environmental challenges go beyond nature. They impact our health and security. Right now, essential government departments lack the staff they need to enforce environmental laws. As a result, we see increasing threats to our green spaces and agricultural lands.
Climate change is hitting closer to home. We are experiencing rising temperatures, stronger storms, and higher sea levels—all of which pose real dangers to our communities. According to a recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), small island nations like Bermuda are among the most impacted globally. This urgency underlines the need for immediate action.
BEST aims to raise awareness about these pressing issues. We believe conservation isn’t just nice to have; it’s vital. This year, we have several priorities:
- Advocating for national policies on climate change, food security, and water management.
- Pushing for much-needed laws on single-use plastics and pesticide safety.
- Reviewing planning applications to safeguard agricultural and conservation areas.
- Engaging with youth through educational programs, including partnerships with Bermuda College.
- Promoting the protection of the Sargasso Sea as part of the UN High Seas Treaty.
We also collaborate with other organizations through the Planning Applications Review Team (PART), assessing proposed developments closely. This work ensures we speak up when vulnerable areas are at risk, emphasizing the necessity of strong environmental protections.
Every living thing is connected to the environment. Inspired by the Parable of the River, we ask ourselves: What if we could address these issues before they escalate? Instead of simply reacting to problems, we must create proactive policies that prioritize long-term health over short-term benefits.
Public participation is crucial. Whether you’re planting trees, reviewing development proposals, or supporting climate legislation, your voice matters. Environmental responsibility isn’t just for experts; it’s a shared commitment we all hold.
Let’s ask tough questions, share our insights widely, and advocate for policies that favor sustainability. Together, we can create a more sustainable Bermuda for everyone.
