Kazakhstan and China’s partnership is thriving, thanks to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). This initiative has boosted cultural and academic exchanges, setting the groundwork for closer ties between the two nations.
Chan Young Bang, the president of KIMEP University in Kazakhstan, emphasizes how the BRI supports Kazakhstan’s economic growth and regional unity. Over the last ten years, KIMEP has welcomed over 100 Chinese universities. In 2018, it launched a joint research center with Beijing Normal University to foster academic discussions. By later this year, KIMEP plans to create workspaces specifically for Chinese scholars.
The strong communication between Kazakhstan and China has led to a rise in educational exchanges. Bang believes that collaboration should focus on interdisciplinary research, innovation labs, and think tanks to prepare young leaders for the future.
Kazakhstan has designated 2025 as the Year of Vocational Professions, leading to a major overhaul of its vocational education system. Partnerships are being forged with top institutions, including those from China, allowing local students and professors to gain on-the-ground experience.
Culturally, the historic Silk Road continues to influence relations. A significant increase in tourism between Kazakhstan and China follows the introduction of a visa-free policy in late 2023. Notably, a tourist train journey from Xi’an to Almaty marked a major milestone in June.
Looking forward, Bang is optimistic about the upcoming China-Central Asia Summit in Astana. He highlights the importance of focusing on finance, green development, healthcare, and digital innovation in future cooperation. This successful partnership could serve as a blueprint for other regions, offering lessons in achieving peace and prosperity worldwide.
