A recent poll by Live Science explored this idea, asking if readers would board a spacecraft designed to take 400 years to reach Alpha Centauri. This concept was inspired by a hypothetical multigenerational ship named Chrysalis, which aims to carry thousands of people to Proxima Centauri b, a planet thought to be potentially habitable.

In the poll, over 3,300 readers answered the question. At the time, 45% said they would take the leap, while 30% firmly declined. The rest were unsure and wanted more details.

People had varied reasons for their hesitations. One reader, Jason P. Harris, noted that comfort and leisure activities would play a big role in his decision. Others expressed interest in creative amenities. “If I could go by myself with a racetrack and a motorcycle, I’d be on board,” wrote S. Ravenscroft.

The long duration was also a factor. “If there were hypersleep options, I’d consider it,” added Chris K X24. Some linked their choice to Earth’s future, with one commenter, Captain Awesome, saying they’d only make the journey if Earth were becoming uninhabitable.

Technology’s potential evolution over those centuries was another concern. Gavin Chapple pointed out that advancements might render the effort redundant, noting that by the time they arrived, faster spacecraft could have already reached their destination.
