Chandigarh is known for its high standard of living. Residents here consume more water, milk, and calories than the average Indian. They earn more and buy more vehicles too. But despite these perks, the city faces challenges like bureaucratic red tape and rising crime rates.
Recent data from the National Sample Survey Office for 2023-24 shows that Chandigarh’s calorie intake tops national averages. People in urban Chandigarh consume about 2,712 kcal daily compared to 2,240 kcal nationwide. Even neighboring Punjab and Haryana can’t match this.
Water supply is impressive as well. Each resident gets around 252 liters a day, far above the national average of 135 liters. Milk consumption is also noteworthy; people here drink about 14.2 liters per month, compared to just 5.6 liters nationally.
Electricity consumption in Chandigarh is high too. The average per capita use stands at 1,702 kWh, significantly higher than the national average of around 1,200-1,300 kWh. This increased demand comes from the city’s urban and commercial sectors.
When it comes to electric vehicles, Chandigarh is leading the charge. In 2025-26, the region reported a 12% penetration rate for EV sales, placing it third in the country after Tripura and Assam. NITI Aayog’s transport electrification report ranked Chandigarh first in India with a score of 90, well ahead of the national average of 37.
However, there are areas that need improvement. The NITI Aayog’s 2026 Business Reforms Action Plan shows Chandigarh is in the “Jump start needed” category, highlighting the need for regulatory reforms to match states like Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat.
Crime is a pressing issue too. According to the National Crime Records Bureau’s “Crime in India 2023” report, Chandigarh’s crime rates have surpassed the national average. This includes serious offenses like murder and theft. Worryingly, the city has the highest rate of crime against senior citizens among all states and Union Territories. In 2023, there were 31 cases of cheating involving elderly victims, translating to a shocking crime rate of 46.2%.
In summary, Chandigarh stands out as a high-consumption, affluent city but must tackle governance challenges and public safety issues to fully enjoy its advantages. Balancing growth with safety and efficiency will be key as it moves forward.
