Wicked: For Good (2025) Film Review
Filmmaker Jon M. Chu continues the story of Wicked with the sequel Wicked: For Good. This time, though, the magic feels a bit lost. While Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) and Ariana Grande (Glinda) shine in their roles, the script doesn’t do them justice, cramming in too many elaborate scenarios that often feel forced.
The sequel takes off some years after the events of Wicked: Part 1, immersing us in a vibrant Oz. However, many supporting characters, like Jonathan Bailey’s Fiyero and the roles played by Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Yeoh, feel underdeveloped. They don’t contribute much to the plot and can even seem like distractions.
One significant issue is that the tone is heavier this time. Unlike the delightful energy of the first film, this sequel leans into negativity. Fiyero’s character takes unexpected turns that may not resonate with all viewers. Moreover, Marissa Bode’s interpretation of Nessarose, Elphaba’s sister, often makes her more of a plot device than a fully realized character.
Some scenes are confusing, like the strange wedding interruption involving wild animals, which leads to unfelt emotional moments rather than enjoyable storytelling. This lack of coherence leaves audiences questioning the magic and charm that defined the first installment.
Yet, at the center of this sequel is the bond between Glinda and Elphaba. Their performances during poignant moments, like singing “Because I Knew You,” show a deep connection that resonates. Some viewers may even shed tears, but it risks feeling manipulative given the story’s unevenness.
Cynthia Erivo is a formidable presence, while Grande injects energy into her role. Young Glinda, played by Scarlett Spears, is also commendable in her brief moments. Still, the film’s struggles stem from an overabundance of side characters, making it feel larger than its heart.
In a recent survey by BoxOfficePro, about 70% of fans who watched the original film expressed high hopes for the sequel, but many reviewers echo a common sentiment: it fails to capture the same magic. This reflects a broader trend in sequels often trying to expand their universe but neglecting core relationships.
While Wicked: For Good might attract a big audience, it seems less likely to earn the same accolades as its predecessor. It does make clever nods to classic elements of The Wizard of Oz, which diehard fans will likely appreciate. Still, it might need more heart and coherence to resonate fully.
Though there are highs, the film earns a rating of 6 out of 10, primarily for the lead performances and musical moments that remind us of the film’s emotional core. The movie may charm its audience on a surface level, but it struggles to match the depth and magic of the original.
