SEARSMONT, Maine – There’s been a significant incident at Robbins Lumber Inc. on Main Street South. An explosion followed by a large fire occurred, injuring at least five people. The severity of their injuries remains unclear.
Emergency responders are on site, managing what’s called a mass casualty incident. In these situations, local hospitals can become overwhelmed with patients needing care. MaineGeneral Hospital received one patient with burns, who is now receiving advanced treatment.
Catherine Robbins-Halsted, the co-owner of the mill, stated that all employees are accounted for, which she considers the most important thing. “Buildings can be replaced, but employees cannot,” she emphasized, praising the fire department’s quick response.
According to Ben Hamel, the mill’s purchasing manager, the blaze began where wood shavings are packed in plastic bags. The flames quickly reached a nearby silo filled with dust, leading to the explosion.
