An explosion occurred at the U.S. Embassy in Oslo, Norway, early Saturday morning. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but the blast caused minor damage to the embassy’s entrance.
Local police responded quickly and have yet to determine what caused the explosion. No arrests have been made. According to Michael Dellemyr, the onsite incident commander, the damage was limited, but authorities still took the situation very seriously. Norway’s Justice Minister Astri Aas-Hansen called the incident “unacceptable” and emphasized the need for thorough investigation.
In response to the blast, police deployed a significant presence around the embassy, including dogs, drones, and even a helicopter. Thankfully, no additional explosives were discovered in the area.
Residents nearby shared their reactions on social media. Anna Gilbo, who lives close to the embassy, posted a video showing smoke rising in the distance after the blast. She described it as a powerful noise that shook her entire house. Another witness, Sebastian Toerstad, reported seeing thick smoke while driving past and noted some visible damage at the entrance.
Historically, embassy security has been a key issue globally. Incidents like this highlight ongoing safety concerns for diplomatic missions, not just in Norway but worldwide. According to a 2021 report from the Overseas Security Advisory Council, attacks against embassies dropped significantly from the previous decade, but vigilance remains crucial.
