**Movie Review: Ballerina**
**Director:** Len Wiseman
**Starring:** Ana de Armas, Gabriel Byrne
**Genre:** Action-thriller
**Rating:** 3 stars
As a fan of the John Wick series, I was excited to see Ballerina. Despite its ties to the Wick universe, it aims to carve out its own space. While it shares similarities with last year’s Furiosa, which I enjoyed, I wanted Ballerina to feel more distinct.
The film retains the eye-catching neon style typical of the franchise but approaches action differently. Instead of the long, intricate fight scenes we see in John Wick, Ballerina introduces a more measured pace. Each action piece focuses on a specific item—think ice skates or grenades. This creativity adds a fresh twist, making the fight scenes engaging and unique, with an energetic techno soundtrack enhancing the experience.
However, Ana de Armas’ performance didn’t quite shine alongside seasoned actors like Gabriel Byrne. While she wasn’t bad, Byrne’s portrayal was compelling, leaving her in the shadows. It’s clear that the film has room for growth, and as someone invested in this universe, I hope for more universe-expanding sequels in the future.
Overall, while Ballerina does have its moments, it’s still finding its footing within the John Wick legacy.
As the action film landscape evolves, it’s interesting to note recent trends. According to a 2023 survey by the Motion Picture Association, 63% of viewers prefer unique storylines over sequels and remakes. This shows that while audiences appreciate established franchises, originality is increasingly valued. The success of films like Ballerina will depend on how well they can innovate while honoring their roots.
