Hyderabad: Sanjay Manjrekar recently shared his thoughts on India’s troubling Test series loss against South Africa at home. This defeat marks a worrying trend for the Indian cricket team, having suffered two series losses at home in just two years, first against New Zealand and now against South Africa.
Manjrekar pointed out that the Indian batters struggled notably against spinners. He conveyed that there are deeper issues affecting the team. In his Instagram commentary, he highlighted that India’s batting problems stem from structural flaws in how players adapt to domestic and international cricket.
“When Indian players excel in domestic cricket, it’s like they become NRIs,” he said. “They spend more time playing overseas rather than honing their skills at home.”
In the recent series, only Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja managed to score over 100 runs, indicating a lack of consistent performance from the batting lineup. Though players like Jaiswal and Gill had shown promise during the England tour, they faltered against the spin bowling of Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer.
Manjrekar noted that young players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant faced challenges against spin bowling. Their limited exposure to home conditions leaves them unprepared for such matches.
“Players are getting 9 to 12 Test matches away from home but not enough at home,” he explained. “They come into home Tests with little or no experience on spin-friendly pitches.”
