Brown’s women’s lacrosse team started Ivy League play on a high note, defeating Cornell 8-5 on Saturday at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
In this game, Tessie Batchelder and Ruby Sliwkowski shone brightly. Batchelder scored three goals, while Sliwkowski showcased her skills with four assists. Mackenzie Conway was a standout in goal, making nine crucial saves.
The first quarter was tight, with both teams managing just one goal each. Cornell outshot Brown 7-5, but Conway’s four saves kept the Bears in the game. Mariama Camara scored for Brown, tying things up early.
The second quarter saw Brown pull ahead, outscoring Cornell 2-1. Mackenzie Farley and Batchelder found the net, with Batchelder’s goal just before halftime giving the Bears a 3-2 edge.
However, it was the third quarter that defined the match. Brown dominated, scoring four consecutive goals. Riley Peterson, Batchelder, and Annie Dignazio contributed to this surge. The Bears ended the quarter up 7-2.
Sliwkowski kicked off the fourth quarter with a goal, pushing the lead to 8-2. Despite Brown’s strong performance, Cornell managed to rally and scored three unanswered goals at the end, but it wasn’t enough.
Brown’s next game will be a non-conference matchup against Boston University on March 10, with the game starting at 4 p.m.
