FAIRMONT – The Fairmont Area School District is excited to start a new school year with its new food service provider, Taher. This change was discussed at a recent school board meeting.
Finance Director Jessica Korte shared that the district previously worked with Chartwells for 15 years and even managed the service in-house before that. Every five years, they invite bids from various companies. This time, Chartwells, Taher, SFE LLC, and Lunchtime Solutions submitted proposals.
The bidding process is strict. Korte said, “We need to follow regulations to decide what meals can be served and prepare weekly menus.” They compile extensive documents for the Minnesota Department of Education, which reviews everything before the bids go out.
After evaluating the proposals, Korte noted that they usually prioritize cost. However, this year, with a $700,000 food service fund balance, they could focus more on quality. “We really want fresh ingredients and home-cooked meals,” she added.
New Food Services Director Brad Bearson emphasized that Taher is a chef-driven company. They have a team of chefs who create diverse and exciting meal options, focusing on fresh produce. “They emphasize using local ingredients, which is great for the community,” he said.
Bearson stepped into his role just weeks ago and is already eager to make a difference. While Taher will introduce new recipes, they plan to use up surplus ingredients from the previous provider to avoid waste. The transition has been smooth, with Taher’s meals starting during summer school, which received positive feedback. Korte mentioned the first meal—a hit of nachos and cilantro lime rice—was met with rave reviews.
Throughout the year, a special promotion called Swavory will showcase delightful combinations of sweet and savory dishes. October will feature pumpkin and apple in specific recipes, highlighting seasonal produce.
Board Member Nicole Green expressed enthusiasm, saying the September menus look amazing. “I wish my kids were in school. I’d love to join them for lunch!” Board Member Michael Edman is also optimistic, stating, “I’ve never been this excited about food service before. Expectations are being met!”
Superintendent Andy Traetow noted the strong alignment between the district’s vision and Taher’s approach. Communication with Taher has been exemplary. The district also collaborates with local parochial schools, including St. Paul Lutheran School, to provide meals.
In other news, updates to staff handbooks were approved, including guidelines on social media interactions with students. The high school is preparing for an open house on September 2, with the first day of school on September 3. Meanwhile, elementary conferences will take place on September 2 and 3, with classes starting on September 4.
