ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons have made significant changes by firing head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot. This announcement came shortly after the team wrapped up its second consecutive 8-9 season, extending a streak of eight years without a winning record.
Despite a recent victory over the New Orleans Saints, Morris’s record of 16 wins and 18 losses was not enough to keep him in his position. The season had started with optimism, as many hoped the Falcons would make the playoffs for the first time since 2017.
Owner Arthur Blank expressed his appreciation for both Morris and Fontenot, stating, “The decision to move away from people who represent the organization so well is not an easy one. However, the results on the field have not met our expectations or those of our fans.”
Even though the Falcons finished strong with four straight wins, it wasn’t enough to secure a playoff spot. Carolina won the NFC South with a better divisional record, underscoring a missed opportunity for Atlanta.
After the game, Morris shared his hope to return for another season but had to face the reality of the situation. He stated, “You can’t worry about those things. This is a business.”
Now, the Falcons are looking ahead. Blank has hired the consulting firm Sportsology to help identify new leadership. Both a new coach and GM will be sought concurrently, with ZRG Partners assisting in the coach search.
Historically, the Falcons have cycled through coaches frequently. Morris previously served as interim coach in 2020, going 4-7 after Dan Quinn’s departure. Under Arthur Smith, the team has posted three straight 7-10 records over the last three years.
While losing seasons pile up, some players see promise in the team’s culture. Rookie linebacker Jalon Walker praised Morris for maintaining a strong team spirit, emphasizing how they managed to rally even in tough times. The bond among teammates remains strong, and many believe that connection can foster a fresh start with new leadership.
Despite the layoffs, the desire for improvement is palpable among fans and players alike. The Falcons are now at a crossroads, aiming to reshape their future and regain their competitive edge.
