Falcons Set to Boost Defense: Exciting ‘True Pressure Players’ Acquired in 2025 NFL Draft First Round!

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — The Atlanta Falcons had a major issue last season: their low sack count. With just 31 sacks, they found themselves second to last in the NFL. This problem has been at the front of their minds heading into the 2025 offseason.

To tackle this, the Falcons made a strong commitment to improve their defense, and they showed it during the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

In an exciting twist, the Falcons became the first team in 15 years to draft two edge rushers in the first round. This bold strategy signals their serious intent to change the dynamics of their defense.

“We came into this draft wanting to make an impact,” said Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot. “We knew we had to take players who could really change the game for us.”

The Falcons kicked things off by selecting Jalon Walker, an edge rusher from the University of Georgia, with their 15th pick. Standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 243 pounds, Walker impressed with 6.5 sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss in 2024. His versatility as a player is noteworthy.

“His makeup is unique,” said head coach Raheem Morris. “He can rush from various spots. He’s versatile enough to set edges and can do almost anything on the field. Meeting him in person is unforgettable.”

But the Falcons weren’t finished yet. When their pick at number 26 came up, they decided to trade to move up. In a deal with the Los Angeles Rams, they gave up their 46th pick, a seventh-rounder, and a future first-round pick to secure the 26th spot.

With that pick, they chose James Pearce Jr. from the University of Tennessee. This 6-foot-5, 245-pound athlete totaled 7.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss last season. He also had a standout 10 sacks in 2023.

“Look at his statistics,” Fontenot pointed out. “He had the highest pressure rate in football, consistent over two years. He’s disruptive, whether against the run or pass.”

Recent trends show that investing in edge rushers is crucial in the NFL. A study found that teams with high sack totals often perform better in games. In fact, the top ten teams in sacks last season made the playoffs. By focusing on this area, the Falcons hope to improve their overall performance significantly.
