Fallout 5 is officially in the works! Recent news from the Xbox Two Podcast shares that while the game is greenlit, it’s unclear which studio will lead its development. Jez Corden from Windows Central mentioned that Bethesda Game Studios’ teams are tied up with Starfield DLC and The Elder Scrolls VI.
Interestingly, part of the push for Fallout 5 seems to have resulted from Microsoft’s decision to cancel ZeniMax Online’s next MMO project, codenamed Blackbird. Corden explained that building an MMO is costly, especially with heavy competition from games like World of Warcraft and The Elder Scrolls Online. Microsoft opted to allocate resources to the more established Fallout franchise instead.
This cancellation was not taken lightly. Blackbird was still in pre-production and had reportedly been in the works since 2018, aimed to be a new sci-fi IP on a fresh engine. Just months before its cancellation, the project had received positive feedback from higher-ups at Xbox. Corden emphasized the importance of this decision in shifting investments toward projects that could yield a positive return.
While it’s exciting that Fallout 5 is on the horizon, it may be quite some time before we see its release. However, fans can look forward to a Fallout 3 remaster, which may arrive sooner. Interest in the Fallout series spiked with Amazon’s Fallout TV show, which was released in 2024, and has fans buzzing about potential storylines for Season 2.
On a related note, Bethesda is also forging ahead with The Elder Scrolls VI. Todd Howard, head of Bethesda Game Studios, reassured fans that work on this beloved series continues, despite the recent release of Oblivion Remastered.
With so much happening in the Fallout universe, we can expect a lot to unfold in the coming years. As always, the gaming community is eager for updates, and social media is alive with speculation and excitement surrounding these developments.
