WILL COUNTY, Ill. — A serious situation unfolded on Friday when a relative stopped a juvenile who was allegedly planning a school shooting at Grand Prairie Elementary School in Plainfield. The Will County Sheriff’s Office stated that the juvenile was reportedly on his way to carry out the act when the relative realized he had a firearm.
The relative quickly called 911 and managed to hold the juvenile down until deputies arrived at the scene on Helmar Lane around 1 p.m. When law enforcement arrived, they detained the juvenile and found a Glock handgun along with a backpack filled with loaded magazines, knives, an accelerant, gloves, and other suspicious items.
Authorities notified the Plainfield Police Department and Plainfield School District 202 about the incident. To ensure safety, police increased their presence at the school for the remainder of the day, which coincidentally was the last day of the school year.
The school district’s Superintendent, Glenn Wood, shared that the juvenile, a freshman at Plainfield High School-Central Campus, had a history of poor attendance and last attended school in December. Thankfully, the incident occurred after students were dismissed, meaning there was no active threat to those still on campus.
Following the arrest, the juvenile was taken to a hospital after expressing suicidal and harmful thoughts to the responders. The sheriff’s office assured the community that there was no ongoing threat and mentioned that the investigation continues, though no charges have yet been filed.
