TAMPA, Fla. — The brother of Michel Ortega Casanova, an American who died in a clash with Cuban forces, described his sibling’s mission as “obsessive and diabolical.” Michel, a truck driver, was part of a group that attempted to infiltrate Cuba via a Florida-registered boat.
Ortega, along with ten others, was reportedly involved in a shooting incident with Cuban soldiers before being intercepted near Cayo Falcones. Tragically, he was one of four people killed during this encounter. His family is mourning, leaving behind a wife, mother, siblings, daughter, and an unborn grandchild.
The boat’s owner claimed it was stolen shortly before the incident. He suspected an employee, who had family in Cuba, might have taken it. This speaks to the desperation some feel about life in Cuba.
His brother, Misael Ortega, noted, “Only us Cubans who have lived over there understand the great suffering.” He expressed disbelief over Michel’s secret plans and mentioned the devastation felt by their family. “They became so obsessed,” Misael said. “They didn’t think about the consequences nor their own lives.” He reflected on the hope that such sacrifices might one day help free Cuba.
