Fans React: Mayo Under Fire After KU Basketball’s Disappointing Loss

Kansas basketball player Zeke Mayo recently faced a wave of hateful messages online after the Jayhawks lost to Texas Tech, 78-73, at home. In this game, Mayo struggled, scoring just five points with a shooting percentage of 14%.

Following the game, Mayo shared a heartfelt post on social media, expressing his disappointment with his performance. He acknowledged his struggles, stating, “I 100% deserve all the criticism in the world. My performance was beyond pitiful today, and has been for a while now. I work hard every day to improve, but I can’t always be perfect. I’m sorry to our fans and my teammates, and I will keep striving to get better.”

Apart from his apology, Mayo included screenshots of direct messages he received on Instagram that were filled with threats, racist remarks, and other hurtful comments. This highlights the darker side of sports and social media, where athletes can become targets for negativity.

His teammate, Dajuan Harris Jr., showed his support online, reassuring Mayo, “It ain’t nothing to explain brotha I got yo back.” Kansas athletic director Travis Goff also stood by the team. He condemned the hate, stating, “These aren’t Jayhawks. They’re not ours. Driven by gambling and hate. They’ve never competed a day in their life.” He assured Mayo and the team that the Jayhawk community stands united with them.

The loss brought Kansas’s record to 19-10 overall and 10-8 in the Big 12, marking their third home defeat this season, the most since 2017-18. This continuing trend of losses is a concern for the team as they fight to improve their performance as the season progresses.

Mayo, who had been averaging 14.3 points before this game, clearly feels the pressure but is determined to overcome these challenges. It’s a tough journey, but together with support from teammates and fans, he hopes to bounce back stronger.
