Welcome to the SP Roundup! Each Wednesday, I’ll break down how every starting pitcher performed. Let’s dive straight into today’s highlights.
Logan Webb (SFG) vs. NYY
Logan Webb had a rough outing on opening night. He pitched 5 innings, giving up 6 earned runs on 9 hits, with 1 walk and 7 strikeouts. His performance may not reflect it, but there were flashes of brilliance—especially his sinker and changeup placement. Even though the Yankees scored seven runs against him without hitting a home run, Webb still struck out seven batters, managing to generate some swings and misses.
Interestingly, Webb didn’t use his sweeper much against right-handed batters, which may change as the season unfolds. He needs to find a better balance between his cutter and sweeper for future games.
Remember, this was just the first start of the season. It’s too early to draw big conclusions. Webb is known to bounce back, and fans shouldn’t lose hope yet.
Max Fried (NYY) @ SFG
On the flip side, Max Fried shined with a stellar performance. He pitched 6.1 innings without allowing a run and only gave up 2 hits and 1 walk, recording 4 strikeouts. Fried’s reliability is impressive, especially since he usually takes a few starts to get fully warmed up. This time, he came out strong, utilizing his sinker effectively. The changeup was sharp too, making it difficult for hitters to get comfortable.
Interestingly, pitching in Oracle Park likely helped Fried maintain his edge. So far, it looks like he’ll be a key player this season.
What’s Next?
One game to watch coming up is Joe Ryan versus Trevor Rogers. Both pitchers have potential and are expected to bring their A-game, which is exciting for fans and fantasy players alike.
Remember, adjustments and learning experiences are part of the game. Many pitchers take time to find their rhythm. As this season progresses, we’ll see how they adapt and improve.
