A beloved East Texas spot, Edgar’s Big Taco, announced it will close due to a road expansion. This family-run business has been a part of Kilgore since it opened on July 4, 1995, along Highway 31.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Verenice Ordorica, the daughter of owner Ramiro Ordorica, shared the news: “Today will be the last day tacos are served from that original location.” The state will take over the property for its expansion project.
The taco shop, located about 22 miles east of Tyler, served its final customers Thursday. Though this location is closing, Ramiro Ordorica has plans to possibly rebuild elsewhere. He also operates another restaurant on Main Street and a food truck.
Verenice reflected on the impact the shop had on her life. She wrote, “It’s where I learned communication, problem-solving, and multitasking.” Small businesses often involve great sacrifices and long hours, creating memories that last for generations.
This closure connects to a larger project by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). They’ve been planning to expand Highway 31 for nearly a decade, aiming to increase the road’s capacity from two to four lanes. According to TxDOT, the project will cover 3 miles east of Edgar’s, meaning the restaurant would have been directly impacted.
Kilgore, situated in the East Texas Oil Field, has seen gradual population growth over the years. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that the population rose from 12,975 in 2010 to 13,531 by July 2025, reflecting a steady increase in the local community.
While the loss of the original Edgar’s location is felt deeply by many, the downtown spot at 216 E. Main St. remains open. It operates Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
