Farmington Municipal Schools Empower Students to Select Their Own Cafeteria Meals!

In the Farmington Municipal Schools District, students are taking charge of their cafeteria meals. They get to pick what goes on their plates, making lunchtime more exciting.

Marie Johnson, a Student Food Nutrition coordinator, emphasizes the importance of listening to students. “We want to know their favorite menu items because they are the ones eating it,” she explained. This year, they started planning nearly a year in advance to gather student preferences.

On Tuesday, Heights Middle School students had the exciting task of choosing which beef patty they want served next year. “This is all about letting students have a say. They love having that power of choice,” Johnson noted.

The selected beef patty will be featured in the cafeteria during the 2025-2026 school year. Johnson believes that giving students a voice will enhance their lunch experience. “When they help decide the menu, it encourages participation,” she said. The goal is to have 60-70% of students enjoying their meals each day.

Overall, this initiative not only makes lunch more enjoyable but also strengthens the school community by involving students in their own meal choices.
