A state investigator recently testified about the troubling background of Colt Gray, a 14-year-old accused of a tragic school shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia.
Colt’s father, Colin Gray, is facing serious charges, including second-degree murder and child cruelty. Testimony reveals that before the incident, Colin noticed changes in Colt. He described Colt as aggressive and acknowledged the need for mental health support.
Colin had attempted to seek help. He reached out to counselors and mental health facilities, looking into inpatient care for his son. Despite these concerns, he thought spending time hunting together would benefit Colt. He even gifted him a rifle for Christmas, hoping to strengthen their bond after Colt’s first deer hunt. Colin believed that would change things for the better.
Days before the shooting, Colin discovered a poster of Nikolas Cruz, known for the Parkland school shooting, in Colt’s room. When he asked about it, Colt acknowledged that Cruz was involved in a school tragedy.
On the morning of September 4, 2024, Colt sent texts that alarmed Colin, including “I’m sorry. It’s not your fault.” Concerned, Colin left work to check on him. Upon entering Colt’s room, he noticed the AR rifle he’d owned was missing.
Colin said he never imagined Colt could commit such acts. He expressed disbelief that his son could carry a rifle to school. Meanwhile, his daughter Jenni, who was in a nearby middle school during the shooting, described the household dynamics as tense. She noted that physical fights between her father and Colt were common, with Colt often instigating.
Jenni revealed that her father had sought advice on handling Colt’s issues but struggled to take concrete steps. She also mentioned that Colin didn’t securely store firearms, despite being aware of Colt’s troubling behavior and access to guns. On the day after the shooting, she claimed that Colin pressured her to cover for him regarding the situation.
This incident highlights a pressing issue in society: the need for effective mental health support, especially for youth. Statistics show that youth mental health issues have been escalating. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 6 youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year.
It’s essential to recognize the early signs of mental health struggles. Seeking proactive support can save lives and prevent tragedies like this one. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of open conversations about mental health in families and communities.
