Donald Tinsley and his son, Brandon Williams, are set to graduate together from Radford University Carilion (RUC) this Spring. Both will receive their Bachelor of Science degrees in respiratory therapy, making their academic journey a truly family affair.
Brandon, who started at Virginia Western Community College, found RUC when a roommate suggested it. Initially, he considered nursing or physician assistance. However, after discussing options with his admissions counselor and touring the respiratory therapy program, he quickly felt at home. “It was very inviting,” he recalled, appreciating the seamless transition from his previous school.
Excited about his new path, Brandon encouraged his father to check out the program. Donald was hesitant at first but ended up charmed by the same welcoming atmosphere. “We started this together,” Donald explained, highlighting how their rides to school and shared lunch breaks have strengthened their bond.
As they near graduation, both men have gained a wealth of knowledge. Donald believes RUC’s respiratory therapy program is among the best in the nation and views it as a launchpad for his career. “This solid education sets the stage for what’s next,” he stated. Brandon echoed this sentiment, praising the faculty’s dedication: “They genuinely want us to succeed.”
The program is intense yet rewarding, combining hands-on experiences with critical problem-solving. “It’s full of adrenaline and excitement,” Brandon said, emphasizing how those moments challenge and engage students.
Interestingly, both share a deep connection with the community hospital where RUC is located. The Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital, known for women’s and children’s services, also holds sentimental value for the family. Both men were born there, and Donald’s family has ties to the hospital’s history.
“It’s definitely a special place,” Donald remarked, noting how sharing this experience with his son makes it all the more meaningful. “Having someone to reflect with—especially your son—makes it fun.” Their mutual support has been vital, as Brandon puts it: “We want to see each other succeed.”
Their story sheds light on the powerful impact of family ties in education, showcasing how shared goals can deepen connections and enhance the learning experience.
