A 23-year-old named Dawson Noah Maloney drove from New York to a Las Vegas suburb, creating a shocking scene at a power substation. He crashed a rented Nissan Sentra through a gate and into heavy wire reels. Tragically, he then took his own life. Authorities are treating this incident as a potential act of terrorism.
When police found Maloney, he was wearing body armor and had already inflicted a fatal shotgun wound. Fortunately, authorities reported that there is no ongoing threat related to this event.
Initially, the incident was reported as a suicide. However, after searching his vehicle, police discovered an alarming array of weapons. This included two shotguns, an AR-style pistol, loaded magazines, and even two flamethrowers. Additionally, they found a crowbar, a hatchet, and a cellphone.
Inside his hotel room, the situation grew even more concerning. Officers uncovered materials for making explosives, such as thermite and ammonium nitrate. Maloney also had books related to various extremist ideologies, encompassing both right- and left-wing extremism, white supremacy, and anti-government sentiments.
Given the dangerous items found and the nature of the incident, authorities categorized it as a terrorism-related case. Maloney had been reported missing by his family. Before the incident, he communicated troubling messages, showing signs of self-harm and expressing a desire to make the news. He even labeled himself in a note to his mother as a “dead terrorist son.”
The FBI is now involved, investigating links to Maloney’s past. They found gun parts and a 3D printer in two homes in Albany, further raising suspicions.
This situation raises alarms about terrorism trends in cities like Las Vegas. In recent years, the area has faced several threats. Local police chief Kevin McMahill pointed out that the Department of Homeland Security has shifted focus onto immigration issues, which, in his view, weakens counter-terrorism efforts.
